5. Economics of Education

Programs at School of Education associated with economics of education are:

The program aims to instill a thorough understanding of micro- and macro-economic analyses as they apply to the economics of education, a facility for using econometric modeling techniques to formulate complex relationships in education and to test such models with relevant data, and an acquaintance with the other social sciences as they relate to the economics of education.

Specific areas of focus include the production, distribution, and financing of education; the relationship between education and labor markets; the contribution of education to economic growth and development; and the organization of the education industry.

Students are expected to take courses in each of the following four areas: (1) economics and econometrics; (2) statistics; (3) education; and (4) related areas, including research-oriented courses in sociology, political science, psychology, anthropology, history, philosophy, mathematics, engineering-economic systems, and operations research.

Knowing how to apply the tools of economics and econometrics to problems in education will prepare students for positions in universities, research institutions, and government.

Penelitian pendidikan pada umumnya mengandung dua ciri pokok, yaitu logika dan pengamatan empiris (Babbie, 1986:16). Metodologi dalam arti umum, adalah studi yang logis dan sistematis tentang prinsip-prinsip yang mengarahkan penelitian ilmiah. Dengan demikian, metodologi dimaksudkan sebagai prinsip-prinsip dasar dan bukan sebagai methods atau cara-cara untuk melakukan penelitian.

Tahapan-tahapan tertentu yang oleh Bailey disebut sebagai suatu siklus yang llazimnya diawali dengan:

1. pemilihan masalah dan pernyataan hipotesisnya (jika ada);

2. pembuatan desaian penelitian;

3. pengumpulan data;

4. pembuatan kode dan analisis data; dan diakhiri dengan intepretasi hasilnya.

Pelaksanaan penelitian bersifat dinamis: yaitu penelitian yang bersifat terbuka, dilakukan dengan berbagai pendekatan yang tidak kaku (rigit). Proses penelitian diketahuai adalah proses yang dinamis, artinya perkembangan suatu teori diawali dengan pemahaman terhadap teori itu sendiri, yang kemudian menghasilkan hipotesis, lalu dari hipotesis itu diperoleh cara untuk melakukan observasi, dan pada gilirannya observasi itu menghasilkan generalisasi. Atas dasar generalisasi inilah teori itu mungkin didukung atau ditolak.

Pemikiran Wallace dapat memuat daur pendekatan yang bersifat induktife dan pendekatan yang bersifat deduktife. Pendekatan induktif bermula dari keinginan peneliti untuk memberi makna kepada data hasil observasi dalam bentuk generalisasi empiris. Sedangkan, penelitian yang bersifat deduktif dibangun dari data-data kuantitatif-statistik yang berusaha mengadakan uji terhadap seperangkaian hipothesa yang menjadi asumsinya.

Prinsip-prinsip metode ilmiah adalah sebagian besar sama bagi setiap cabang ilmu pengetahuan. Sudah barang tentu perhatian pada segi penekanannya harus diberikan, tetapi hal ini tidak menyangkut prinsip-prinsip metode ilmiah (Vredenbregt, 1985: 59-60). Penelitian pendidikan sebenarnya suatu proses untuk mengetahui ada tidaknya hubungan antar konsep yang dijadikan bahan kajian dalam penelitian. Hubungan antar konsep itu ditunjukkan dalam sebuah hubungan ........Setiap konsep yang kembangkan sebagai variabel penelitian harus dapat menunjukkan beberapa indikator empirik yang ada dilapangan.
