Indonesian Islamic University was established on 27 Rajab 1364 H or to coincide with the July 8, 1945 (40 days before the proclamation of Indonesian Independence), with the name of the Islamic High School (STI) in Jakarta. STI is the noble ideals of the Indonesian national figures who look at the fact that when higher education was that there was a Dutch possession (Technische Institut Hoogeschool or now, Recht Hoogeschool in Jakarta and Bogor Agricultural College (now Bogor Agricultural University). STI born to be evidence of an educated awareness on indigenous communities.
In support by national figures such as Dr. Mohammad Hatta (Proclaimers and former Vice President), Moh. Natsir, Prof. CRC. Muzakkir, Mohamad Roem, KH. Wahid Hasjim, etc., making the development of STI as a base for the national character of education and Islamists as well as a footstool hope all children of the nation.
Along hijrahnya capital of the Republic of Indonesia to Yogyakarta, the STI had migrated and re-inaugurated by President Soekarno on 27 Rajab 1365 H or to coincide with the date 10 April 1946 at Dalem Pangulon Yogyakarta. To increase the role in the struggle, then the STI which was then being the only college to Islam, changed to a university by name or current Indonesian Islamic University Islamic University of Indonesia (Indonesian Islamic University, Al-Islamiya Al Indonesiyah association) in 1947.
Actual changes preceded the opening of STI into UII introductory class (a kind of pre-university) which was inaugurated in March 1948 in Hall nDalem Purbojo, Ngasem Yogyakarta. While the opening of UII (replaces STI) was officially organized on 27 Rajab 1367 H (coinciding with the date June 4, 1948) at nDalem Kepatihan Yogyakarta and received a visit from the ministers and other civil and military officials.
Thus, on 27 Rajab (June 4, 1948) Be the Indonesian Islamic University which is the new face of STI and has been officially operating since three years earlier in the Republic of Indonesia. UII was established at the time of opening four Faculties, namely: Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Education, and Faculty of Religion.
UII as the oldest private universities in Indonesia, and then growing rapidly with over 22 faculty branches, spread all over Indonesia (Surakarta, Madiun, Purwokerto, Gorontalo, Bangil, Cirebon and Klaten) with its center in Yogyakarta.
But, along with the government policy that should be abolished university branch, the branches are then grown as new universities (both state and private), or affiliated with public colleges and universities that already exist. So UII indirectly encourage growth and development of universities in various cities in Indonesia and UII significantly be a part of the history of national education itself. For example, a branch of the Faculty of Medicine in Solo UII has been the initiation for the establishment of UNS Solo.
One simple mission in words but heavy, very heavy, even in the fact that teremban in this historical journey is to realize the words of Bung Hatta UII in the inauguration speech at that time: "At the High School will meet the religion of Islam (religion) and science (science ) in good cooperation to help improve the welfare of the community.
